The Top 10 Most Popular 2014 5e Spells Not in 2024

The most fun and most frustrating activity I've done as a D&D nerd was organizing all 410 spells into a taxonomy that actually explains what spells do.

As of the time of this writing, the 5e 2024 Edition features 29 new spells that aren't in 2014, but there are still 143 spells that haven't been brought over from 2014 to the new version yet. Thanks to [counting what spells are added to spellbooks], we can know exactly which 2014 spells players are missing the most in 2024.

Here's the Top 10 list of the most popular 2014 spells not in 2024:

Absorb Elements

By far the most popular 2014 spell not yet in 2024 is Absorb Elements.

It's a Level 1 spell available to a lot of classes, making it very accessible pick for players. It's also one of only [10 reaction spells currently in the game], making it a very prized spell indeed. Taking reactions is one of my favourite moves in combat, but there are few options for it.

It's so popular that this spell is appearing in spellbooks more often than Fireball, and it's the second most popular reaction spell after Shield.

Silvery Barbs

Well, if it isn't another reaction spell! Silvery Barbs is contentiously powerful, and the only reason it isn't more popular is that only Bards, Sorcerers, and Wizards can grab it.

Frostbite

Booming Blade

Create Bonfire

Shape Water

Ceremony

Control Flames

Snare

Catapult
