You touch one Large or smaller object that isn't being worn or carried by someone else. Until the spell ends, the object sheds Bright Light in a 20-foot radius and Dim Light for an additional 20 feet. The light can be colored as you like.

Covering the object with something opaque blocks the light. The spell ends if you cast it again.

The light can be colored as you like. Completely covering the object with something opaque blocks the light. The spell ends if you cast it again or dismiss it as an action.

If you target an object held or worn by a hostile creature, that creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw to avoid the spell.

Light 5.5e 2024 vs. 5e 2014 edition differences

The 2024 version specifies the object must be "Large or smaller" and "not being worn or carried by someone else," whereas the 2014 version only restricts size and allows targeting objects held or worn by a creature, requiring a Dexterity save to avoid the spell. The 2024 version omits the ending condition "or dismiss as an action."
