Each object in a 20-foot cube within range is outlined in blue, green, or violet light (your choice). Any creature in the area when the spell is cast is also outlined in light if it fails a Dexterity saving throw. For the duration, objects and affected creatures shed dim light in a 10-foot radius.

Any attack roll against an affected creature or object has advantage if the attacker can see it, and the affected creature or object can't benefit from being invisible.

Faerie Fire 5.5e 2024 vs. 5e 2014 edition differences

The 2024 version specifies "up to 1 minute" duration, whereas the 2014 version states 1 minute. The 2024 version clarifies that objects are outlined regardless of creatures' saving throws, while the 2014 states only creatures are outlined if they fail a save. The 2024 version explicitly states affected creatures can't benefit from invisibility; the 2014 version states they can't benefit from being invisible.

Spells similar to Faerie Fire

  • Bless, 1st-level enchantment

Both are low-level support spells that improve allies' chances in combat across multiple targets for a short, concentration-limited duration.
  • Bane, 1st-level enchantment

Bane is a small-area, concentration debuff with a save that functionally mirrors Faerie Fire's group-focused battlefield advantage manipulation, but applied to enemies instead of making them easier to hit.
  • See Invisibility, 2nd-level divination

See Invisibility addresses the same tactical problem—dealing with hidden or invisible foes—by letting casters perceive them rather than outlining them for allies.
  • Color Spray, 1st-level illusion

Color Spray is a first-level, area-effect spell that targets multiple creatures and forces a contest of defenses for a non-damaging but combat-altering result, similar in scale and tactical intent to Faerie Fire.
  • Hypnotic Pattern, 3rd-level illusion

Although higher level, Hypnotic Pattern is a multi-target, save-or-fail crowd-control spell that shapes the battlefield and can enable allies to act safely against affected foes in the same way Faerie Fire facilitates attacks.
