You create a 20-foot radius sphere of fog centered on a point within range. The sphere spreads around corners, and its area is heavily obscured. It lasts for the duration or until a wind of moderate or greater speed (at least 10 miles per hour) disperses it.

Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the radius of the fog increases by 20 feet for each slot level above 1st.

Fog Cloud 5.5e 2024 vs. 5e 2014 edition differences

The 2014 version states the fog disperses with moderate or greater wind (at least 10 mph), while the 2024 version specifies dispersal by a strong wind, such as from Gust of Wind. The 2014 version explicitly mentions the radius increasing by 20 feet per slot level above 1st; the 2024 version states the radius increases by 20 feet per slot level above 1 without specifying the method.

Spells similar to Fog Cloud

  • Darkness, 2nd-level evocation

It creates a lasting zone of heavy obscurity to hide or block vision, serving the same tactical obscuring purpose as the target spell.
  • Sleet Storm, 3rd-level conjuration

Both produce an area-effect environmental hazard that shapes the battlefield and impairs enemies' sight and movement over time.
  • Entangle, 1st-level conjuration

Although it restrains rather than obscures, it is a low-level conjuration that creates a persistent area on the battlefield to control enemy positioning.
  • Web, 2nd-level conjuration

It forms a durable, area-based obstruction that controls space and can force enemies to reposition, much like a zone of fog does tactically.
  • Silent Image, 1st-level illusion

This illusion can mimic visual barriers (including fog) to block sight and shape encounters, offering a similar obscuring and deceptive option.
