You create a 20-foot radius sphere of fog centered on a point within range. The sphere spreads around corners, and its area is heavily obscured. It lasts for the duration or until a wind of moderate or greater speed (at least 10 miles per hour) disperses it.

Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the radius of the fog increases by 20 feet for each slot level above 1st.

Fog Cloud 5.5e 2024 vs. 5e 2014 edition differences

Strong wind now disperses it, instead of moderate-or-strong wind. That’s the only mechanical change.

Fog Cloud is a commonly chosen level 1 spell. Choosing it adds an established option to your spellbook.

Spells similar to Fog Cloud

  • Darkness 2nd-level evocation

It creates a lasting zone of heavy obscurity to hide or block vision, serving the same tactical obscuring purpose as the target spell.

  • Sleet Storm 3rd-level conjuration

Both produce an area-effect environmental hazard that shapes the battlefield and impairs enemies' sight and movement over time.

  • Entangle 1st-level conjuration

Although it restrains rather than obscures, it is a low-level conjuration that creates a persistent area on the battlefield to control enemy positioning.

  • Web 2nd-level conjuration

It forms a durable, area-based obstruction that controls space and can force enemies to reposition, much like a zone of fog does tactically.

  • Silent Image 1st-level illusion

This illusion can mimic visual barriers (including fog) to block sight and shape encounters, offering a similar obscuring and deceptive option.
