Choose a Humanoid that you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or have the Paralyzed condition for the duration. At the end of each of its turns, the target repeats the save, ending the spell on itself on a success.

Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. You can target one additional Humanoid for each spell slot level above 2.

Hold Person 5e 2024 vs. 2014 edition differences

The 2024 version specifies "up to 1 minute" duration, while the 2014 version states exactly 1 minute. The 2024 version explicitly grants the target the Paralyzed condition, whereas the 2014 version states "be paralyzed." The saving throw is described as "repeats" in 2024, but "another Wisdom saving throw" in 2014. The 2024 version omits the 30-foot proximity requirement for multiple targets.
